What to do if you have only one day available in Tromso

The author of the article, H. Skogheim, is one of Tromsø's inhabitants and has lived in the city for decades. Here are some of his recommendations.

Things to do in Tromsø in one day - summarized

This article contains suggestions that include the following: Polaria, Randis Parfymeri, Joker, Skirri, Polarmuséet, Tromsøbrua, Tromsdalen kirke (Arctic Cathedral), Sherpatrappa, Fjellheisen, Tromsøbadet, Northern Lights.

Program for the day

You should start at Polaria, an Arctic experience center. Unfortunately you will not be able to feed the seals, but you should watch the movie.
After that, you should walk Storgata in north direction. Storgata is the main street of Tromsø. In Storgata 59 you will find Randis Parfymeri. Go inside and spend some money. Spend some money at Joker, the shop at the next corner, buy som hveteboller, these will be fine and necessary for the next hours. You shold have som water with you as well.

Walk diagonally across the main square and drink som coffee at Skirri, the cafeteria in Kystens Hus, which is the big, black building on the harbord. Take a break.

Walk on the pier to Polarmuséet, which is a museum that preserves and disseminates stories related to Norwegian capture, polar expeditions and Arctic science.

The next stop on the trip is Tromsøbrua the bridge, which links Tromsøya and the mainland together. The bridge is 1036 meters and from the top you can enjoy the view of the center of Tromsø, Tromsøysundet (the sea between Tromsøya and the mainland) and Tromsdalen, the district on the mainland side. From here you can also see many of the mountains that surround Tromsø, as well as the districts that lie along Tromsøysundet. From here you can also see Arctic Cathedral on the mainland side.

The church in Tromsdalen, Tromsdalen kirke, is also called the Arctic Cathedral, but it is not a catheral, just an ordinary church. (In Norwegian Lutheran Church, domkirke is used to designate the bishop's headquarters. In Tromsø there is Tromsø domkirke, which you pass after Joker, mentioned earlier.)

After looking around the Arctic Cathedral and possibly hearing something about that history you can move on to the Sherpatrappa or the Cable Car. The goal now is Fjellheisen the cable car's end station in the mountains.

In the summer season, you should go Sherpatrappa, if you are fit enough. It may take some time and you may get sweaty, but it may be worth the effort. The stairs are made by sherpas from Nepal. Elsewhere in the year it is just as easy to take the mountain lift (Cable Car) up and down, it is expensive but well worth the cost. How to get to Fjellheisen Cable Car by bus.

From Fjellheisen, the building on the mountain, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Tromsø and the surrounding areas, weather permitting. Take some time and advice for some refreshments in the cafe. If you have plenty of time and the weather is good you should stroll around the mountain a little.

When you get down, take bus route 26 to the city, if you prefer not to walk. Get off at the Torgsenteret and spend some time and money in the stalls in the square.

If it is dark in the evening, ie between September and March, you should take the opportunity for a bath at Tromsøbadet, the city's water park. Here you can be out in good and warm water and watch the stars as you push up and down in the water. Maybe you're lucky and get to see the Northern Lights too! Wouldn't that be amazing?
