Weather forecast and weather conditions when you stay in TromsøThe author of the article, H. Skogheim, is one of Tromsø's inhabitants and has lived in the city for decades. Here is what he can tell about the weather in Tromso. | ||
Weather conditions and forecast - summarizedThe climate is characterized by long and relatively cold winters, and short, and sometimes quite hot, summers.Weather conditionsTromsø is located at 69 degrees north latitude. Other cities on which lie equally far to the north are Zapoljarnyj in Russia and Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn) located on the west coast of Greenland. The Gulf Stream passes the coast and thus the climate is strongly influenced by it.First a little about the weather in summer. The summers can be characterized by long periods of northern weather that produces fog in the mountains and temperatures of around 10 - 12 degrees Celsius. Occasionally it can snow in July, but the snow does not stay. At other times it can be 20 - 30 degrees for several days in a row. But that doesn't happen very often. Sometimes there can be real torrential rain and almost a full storm. So the summer weather can be very varied. In autumn, the weather can also vary quite a lot, with temperatures of over 20 degrees in September and below minus 10 degrees in November. The latter happens when high pressure settles over Siberia and sends freezing air towards Tromsø. The weather in winter can vary greatly. Some winters don't snow until January, other times the snow falls as early as October. But it is usually cold, only interrupted by occasional periods of mild weather. If you are going to look for the Northern Lights, it is probably best when it is cold, when the weather is often clear. However, there is still no guarantee that you will see the Northern Lights on cold nights. Spring, yes. This year, in 2025, we "had" spring 3 - 4 times before the real spring came. That is, there were long periods of mild weather followed by wintry weather. Spring can often be cold and clear. Weather forecastsWe have two weather services in Norway. yr.no is perhaps the one that reports the most accurately, but Storm is quite accurate when it comes to weather forecasts. Then we have pent.no, which gives us the weather forecast from both weather services. This website also has a separate page about the weather for Tromsø, in Norwegian. You can probably find an online service that can translate the page into your language. Or maybe your browser can?Tip: How to get to Fjellheisen Cable Car by bus
